Illustration of civil litigation and dispute resolution

A civil dispute is one where someone owes you money, broke an agreement or caused you a loss, and you want it put right. It isn't about punishment. It's about getting paid, getting compensated or getting someone to do what they promised.

BR Law Firm ( Office of Hassan Tamim Advocates & Legal Consultants ) acts for individuals and companies in civil disputes in Dubai, from the first demand letter to enforcing a judgment. The firm has more than 38 years of practice in the UAE.

What a Civil Lawyer in Dubai Handles

Most civil files fall into a handful of types:

  • Unpaid money. Invoices, loans and debts that haven't been paid. See debt collection and recovery.
  • Contract and agreement disputes. One side hasn't done what the agreement required.
  • Compensation claims. Where someone's act or failure has caused you a financial loss.
  • Disputes between partners. Covered on our partnership disputes page.
  • Enforcing a judgment you've already won.

Civil or Criminal: Which Is It?

It's the first thing to settle, because it decides which court hears the matter and what you can actually recover. A civil claim gets you paid or compensated. A criminal complaint is about an offence.

Some situations can raise both at once. A bounced cheque is the common example: it can lead to a claim for the money and to a separate criminal matter. Our cheque bounce lawyers page explains how the two interact, and criminal lawyers in Dubai covers the criminal side.

How a Civil Dispute Usually Unfolds

  1. Review. We read the documents and tell you honestly whether the claim is worth bringing.
  2. Formal demand. Many disputes start with a legal notice setting out what's owed and by when.
  3. Settlement. A good number end here, once the other side reads a properly prepared claim.
  4. Filing the case. If they don't, the claim goes to court. Our guide on how to file a case in Dubai has the detail.
  5. Judgment and appeal. Either side can appeal. See filing an appeal after judgment.
  6. Enforcement. Winning and being paid are separate stages. Enforcement runs as its own process against what the other party holds.

Court is the fallback, not the automatic first move.

What a Civil Court Can Order

OrderWhat it means for you
PaymentThe other party pays what is owed
CompensationYou're paid for the loss their act or failure caused
EnforcementAction against their assets if they don't pay
Do or stopAn order requiring someone to do something, or stop doing it

When the Other Party Is Outside the UAE

It complicates the claim without blocking it. Serving papers and enforcing a judgment both take longer, and where the other party's assets sit usually matters more than where they live. That's worth working out before you file.

What It Costs

Frequently, yes. A good number of disputes end once the other side reads a properly prepared claim. Court is the fallback, not the automatic first move.

Payment of what is owed, compensation for loss, enforcement against assets, or an order requiring somebody to do or stop doing something.

That complicates service and enforcement rather than blocking the claim. Where their assets sit usually matters more than where the person lives.

Winning and being paid are separate stages. Enforcement runs as its own process against whatever the other party holds here.
